Camera & Screen Issues in macOS

Learn how to use your camera and screen optimally in macOS.

Written by Florian Gerstner

Recording your screen and placing yourself in the recording via camera at the same time is an incredible feature for tutorials and complex video scenes.

It works by allowing you to place your camera recording anywhere on the screen you are recording. This makes it part of the entire screen and includes it in the recording.

You can freely move the camera recording around the screen while recording, for example to make obscured elements visible.

However, always make sure that the camera recording remains on the screen you are currently recording.

I can't move the camera recording onto my screen

When you open a program in full-screen mode in macOS, it is assigned its own desktop (essentially its own screen), which no other program can access.

If you try to drag the camera recording onto this desktop, it will not work.

Solutions

  • Use Safari

    • As a native system application, a camera recording started by Safari can also be dragged onto programs in full-screen mode.

  • Use the same browser in full-screen mode

    • The browser that starts the screen recording can display the camera recording in all of its windows.

    • If you want to record a website, use the same browser for the video recorder and the target website.

  • Maximize instead of using full-screen mode

    • Do not enlarge the target program to full-screen mode; simply maximize it.

You can do this by double-clicking the top bar, i.e. the area where the red "X" for closing is located.

My camera is not included in the recording

⚠️ It is important to always select an entire screen as the target for screen recording to ensure that all content is captured correctly.

Individual program windows or browser tabs only record themselves and do not support the additional camera, even though this is not noticeable during recording.
