Allow Camera and Microphone Access in Your Browser

In this guide, Christian shows you how to grant the Video Recorder access to your camera and microphone.

Written by Toni Hannemann

Do you want to record a video and are getting error messages without knowing why? Then you've come to the right place.

Why does this happen?

Due to increased privacy requirements, all access to the camera and microphone must now be confirmed by the User (that is, you). This prevents websites from recording you without your consent.

But don't worry, in most cases, it only takes a few clicks.

Since browsers differ from one another, I have created separate tutorials for Google Chrome, Apple Safari, and Firefox. If you use another browser, use the Chrome tutorial as a guide—it will probably be the most similar, although there may be minor differences in wording or design.

Google Chrome

Why does this happen?

When you opened the Video Recorder for the first time, you most likely saw these 2 pop-ups:

If you clicked "Block," the Video Recorder can no longer use your camera or microphone and unfortunately cannot ask you again.

It is also possible that you blocked only one of the two. In that case, you only need to re-enable the blocked device.

How do you fix the problem?

You will now probably see one of these two symbols in your address bar:

These symbols indicate that the Video Recorder is trying to access your camera or microphone, but the browser is blocking it.

When you click the symbol with the small red "x," one of these windows will appear:

The device is currently disabled. Click Allow access to (my camera/microphone). You do not need to pay attention to the device selection, as you can only configure this in the Video Recorder itself.

The window should now look like this, and you can click Done.

Now that the error has been fixed, you can click Try again and start recording.

What if I only see the camera symbol without a red x?

Only the microphone is shown as missing, but the camera symbol in the address bar does not have a red x? Here's the solution.

This happens when you want to record your camera and microphone, but your camera has already been enabled.

To enable the microphone, you need to go to the settings.

Go to the Google Chrome settings.

In the settings, click Privacy and security, then click Site settings.

Find Permissions and click Microphone:

You will now see that your LearningSuite is not allowed to access the microphone:

("dev.learningsuite.at" is the name of our test platform; look for the name of your platform.)

Make sure that, as in the image above, Sites can ask to use your microphone is selected.

Then remove your LearningSuite from the "Not allowed to use your microphone" list by clicking the trash icon 🗑️.

You are now finished and can restart the Video Recorder and begin recording 🥳

Safari

Why does this happen?

When you opened the Video Recorder for the first time, you most likely saw these 2 pop-ups:

If you clicked "Never for This Website," the Video Recorder can no longer use your camera or microphone and unfortunately cannot ask you again.

It is also possible that you blocked only one of the two. In that case, you only need to re-enable the blocked device.

If you clicked "Don't Allow" more than 2 times, the device will also be blocked.

How do you fix the problem?

You now need to go to the settings to allow the camera and microphone again.

To do this, open the Safari settings.

Click the Websites category.

In the General list, open the Camera or Microphone options, depending on which device is blocked.

("dev.learningsuite.at" is the name of our test platform; look for the name of your platform.)

You will see that "Deny" is selected for your device.

Select the Allow option.

Your devices should now be allowed again, and you can return to the Video Recorder 🥳

Now that the error has been fixed, you can click Try again and start recording.

⚠️ If it still does not work, close the LearningSuite tab and open it again. This allows Safari to reload the permission settings.

Firefox

Why does this happen?

When you opened the Video Recorder for the first time, you most likely saw these 2 pop-ups:

If you clicked "Block," the Video Recorder can no longer use your camera or microphone and unfortunately cannot ask you again.

It is also possible that you blocked only one of the two. In that case, you only need to re-enable the blocked device.

How do you fix the problem?

You will now see these symbols with a camera and/or microphone in the address bar:

These symbols indicate that the Video Recorder is trying to access your camera or microphone, but the browser is blocking it.

When you click the symbol, one of these windows will appear:

Click Temporarily blocked or Blocked to remove the block.

The block has now been removed, and the pop-up to grant access will appear again the next time you start the Video Recorder.

Now that the error has been fixed, you can click Try again and start recording.
